National Child Passenger Safety Certification

The National Child Passenger Safety Certification Training Program (CPS certification program) certifies people as child passenger safety technicians and instructors. Since the CPS certification program began in 1997, with the first courses offered in 1998, more than 169,000 people have successfully completed the CPS Certification Course, including more than 42,000 currently certified CPS technicians.

Many technicians are trained health and safety professionals, others are parents, and some are volunteers. They all have one thing in common: they care deeply about kids and want to make sure they’re safe.

CPS technicians and instructors put their knowledge to work by conducting child safety seat checks, where parents and caregivers receive hands-on assistance for proper use of child restraint systems and safety belts. These dedicated technicians offer education, support and guidance in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories.

REMEMBER

  • Children 12 and under
should always ride in the back seat properly restrained.

  • Wear your seat belt every time you ride

  • If children see an adult buckle up, they are more likely to buckle up too!

Pre School and Elementary School Programs

Chester County Highway Safety offers an interactive seat belt program designed for pre-school, elementary and middle school students. Emphasis is placed on the importance of being properly restrained inside a vehicle and teaching kids the safest place to sit in a car. The program also covers crash dynamics and kids will learn why they should not sit in the front seat where there’s an active airbag. To demonstrate what happens in a crash when someone is restrained and unrestrained in a vehicle, “Eggbert” and his shiny toy convertible are the “hit” of the presentation. For the interactive segment of the program, some students will be invited to volunteer and sit in our “pretend car” to show them why the back seat is the safest place to sit and to show what happens when just one person in a car is not buckled up. Lastly, we will play a short musical video called “Do the Buckle” that even the adults will love!
